Substance by Bronx Slang
“It’s a fine line between taking losses and always winning” – mind and matter from Bronx Slang, produced by Fake Blood and Jadell
It should come as no surprise that Bronx Slang bring an album brimming with ‘Substance’. Hip-hop having relinquished its hold on this all important property – and the same can be said for the world in general – Jerry Beeks and Miggs uphold a commitment to treating the bigger picture with nothing less than 20/20, during a time when an ailing planet seeks a hard reset.
‘Substance’ once again channels that good old fashioned Big Apple sound of the rap idealist and authenticator: the blasts of ‘You Already Know’, ‘Another Night in New York’ and ‘Copy That’ come through like a rhino stampede. Produced top to bottom by prolific UK pair Jadell and Fake Blood, ‘Substance’ expands to funk and soul positions spending time in the crates (‘This Ain’t No Love Song’), synth angles maximising Bronx Slang’s authoritarianism (‘Mic Check’), and pitching the pair to the edge of panic (‘Clock’s Ticking’).
Beeks and Miggs read the world its rights, and last rites, without allowing themselves a moment’s relaxation: ‘Living With A Mask On’ goes against simple COVID-related rhetoric, and ‘Excuse Me Again’ shows that the ‘Excuse Me Officer’ narrative from the first Bronx Slang album needs repeating. No political agenda will be hushed up; now’s not the time for diluting anything either.
Their inner city testimonies and fine tuning of front page news define the realistic rather than keeping it real: they remain observant, unfazed masters of keeping their heads, resistant to propaganda and managing the weight of modern life.
Eagerly anticipated, Bronx Slang’s sophomore album, preceded by 2020’s controlled explosion ‘The Bronx Kill Mixtape’, has pocketed support from BBC 6 Music, Worldwide FM andDJ Tony Touch, via Eminem’s Shade 45 station on SiriusXM.
Bronx Slang’s self-titled debut from 2019, described as ‘scintillating’ by DJ Mag and also acclaimed by The Wire, featured singles earmarked as Tune of the Month in Mixmag, supported by BBC 6 Music’s Huw Stephens, Huey Morgan, Nemone, and Tom Ravenscroft, and with the backing of the legendary DJ Premier.
