about
If music can take our mind to any imaginable place, on endless individual journeys, Noa Erni’s “The Mental Traveller” is the infinite soundtrack. A soundtrack for mental wandering and soul searching, a blend of rap, jazz and hip-hop beats. “The Mental Traveller”, an album assembled like a literary anthology, offers musical arrangements and unique narratives where epilogue and prologue of each track merge seamlessly. Far beyond the horizon of compiling single tracks, “The Mental Traveller” is a journey of sound and unity. Inspired by David Axelrod and William Blake, Ahmad Jamal and Flying Lotus – just to name a few – this work aims to be a tribute to these legends’ legacies of past, present and future, detached from trends, norms and classical narrative structure. Swiss-born producer and computer conductor Noa Erni has been crafting obscure jazz and hip-hop behind closed curtains (a.k.a. his flat in Berlin, Germany) for years – free from external pressure and as an adjunct to his day jobs as sommelier and co-owner of local fine wine store “Friedenauer Weinhandlung”. While the album sounds like it was played by a jazz outfit with years of stage experience, the truth surprises and is even more exciting: Noa crafted the songs in countless hours of experimenting with a midi keyboard, various instrument plugins and perfected reverb settings. It was not one and the same band but one and the same person. Just a few tracks include actual live instruments.credits

Following on from a series of singles, 'Runnin' Wild', 'Confliction' and 'Jump The Line', First Word Records is very pleased to present a full-length EP from alt-soul artist Olivier St.Louis - 'M.O.T.H. (Matters Of The Heartless)'
Olivier was born in Washington DC of Haitian and Cameroon heritage, but spent his teens studying in the UK. As a teenager, his CD and tape collection would encompass a wide range of genres, from hip hop and r&b to garage and British alternative rock. A bio-science student, Olivier couldn't suppress his true passion of music. After graduating, he took on a "Jekyll and Hyde" lifestyle; working as a scientist in the day, and a musician at night.
His work as a recording artist eventually lead to his debut release in 2011, 'The Mr. Saint Louis EP', released under the moniker Olivier Daysoul and produced by longtime collaborator and fellow Washingtonian, Oddisee, a revered hip hop producer / artist in his own right. From here on, Olivier began laying down vocals, collaborating and touring with a wide-range of artists over the following years, including Hudson Mohawke, C2C, Laura Mvula and German rockers, AnnenMayKantereit.
After taking a hiatus from feature work, Olivier decided to concentrate on nurturing his own sound. Embracing a newfound love for blues, rock and funk, a series of late night sessions saw him engulfed in new soundscapes, and reverting back to his birth name, Olivier St.Louis. This saw him release two critically-acclaimed EPs with Berlin-based label, Jakarta, and the release of 'The Serious EP' with Bibio on Warp Records.
Following world tours with many of the afore-mentioned, Olivier has been working on all-new material, which is now set to be unleashed upon the world via Worldwide Award-winning London label, First Word Records.
The 'M.O.T.H.' EP begins with the downtempo bump of 'Jump The Line' before the adrenaline-racing rhythm of 'Runnin Wild' steps up the pace. Next is second single 'Confliction'; a considerably moodier affair, with Oddisee on assist on the bars as well as on the boards. The flipside begins on a similar vein as the first with the smoothed-out soul of 'All In Love', before we head into the slightly jazzier tinged 'Quit'. 'Serotonin' follows next with a groove and bassline reminiscent of Sly Stone, before we close out with the feel-good uptempo boogie stepper, 'Steady'. With Oddisee on the boards throughout, this EP exemplifies Olivier's unique take on alternative soul.
Comparisons have already been made to something between D'Angelo and Shuggie Otis - big boots to fill, though easy to believe once you've seen and heard this man do his thing. This EP is essentially a classically-structured selection of soul-funk with a rock edge, and a touch of jazz. Each track is laced with Olivier's sweet harmonies and fuzzed-out guitar licks throughout, and mixed down with a little 2020 boom bap thump. A prime example of Olivier's unique talents and a set of quality contemporary alt-soul.
When asked his thoughts on his artistry, Olivier St. Louis simply states "no punches pulled, no compromises, just me".credits

about
Over three years in the making, ZIK ZAK is an African musical odyssey, featuring some of the freshest talent from nine countries on the mother continent. Tying this remarkable range of artists together are German production team ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS, weaving the vocal talents of the African singers into their distinctive “Boom Dub” sound. Drawing on Hip Hop, Dancehall, Roots Reggae, Bass Music, Soul, Electronica and Breakbeat, the production incorporates live instruments and musical influences from all over Africa and its diaspora.
The concept behind all these tracks is ZIK ZAK (“Zig-Zag” in English), mapping out each artist’s life of tragedy and success, in a context of global inequality and ruthless capitalism. This album responds to the urgent need to understand the daily struggle for survival by creative artists and musicians from the global south. Each artist gives a unique voice to their rocky way through the contemporary African landscape, revealing a new perspective from a different city, country, religion, and ideology. This is ZIK ZAK.
It's easy to forget how much harder it is for artists and musicians to survive away from the relative comfort of the richer parts of the world. In Africa, employment levels are shockingly low and the... morecredits

Despite the troubles globally faced in 2020 it’s safe to say that The Allergies have been a shining ray of light, having had an absolutely glorious year, releasing their fourth studio album, achieving the ‘A playlist’ on BBC 6Music and Radio Eins, climbing high in the NACC US college charts, and generally receiving critical acclaim from a world that had an understandable appetite for some joyful and fun music in their lives…
And they are not done yet! As they return once more to continue their mission of reshaping vintage sounds for the modern dance floor. Packing a couple of dope tracks that of course fit their ethos of creating music that is both fun and funky.
Not content with sampling everything they can get their itchy scratchy fingers on, they’ve decided to look back into their own catalogue to appropriate their own material into something new. Yes indeed, the samplers become the sample…
And given their expansive funk-filled legacy, why wouldn’t they? Especially given that the sample in question is of the third unofficial Allergy - Andy Cooper (Ugly Duckling) and his jumping vocals from their track ‘Main Event’.
‘Jumping Off’ sees that vocal restyled from a classic hip hop cut into a party-starting, beat-tastic, dance floor bomb a la Fatboy Slim, this is one that has the magnetism to make it a surefire crowdpleaser from the moment the needle drops…
And flip it over for more fire - ‘Gather Around’ is a chic, good time, upbeat, soul shaking track with so much bombastic-ness packed in that could make Shaggy blush.
The good news doesn’t stop there as these two DJ weapons are going to be packed together on 7” on a limited run of 300 just before the festive season really gets going. As always they sell out fast so act quick to get in on the action!credits

Lyrics:
Have I told you yet that you are looking mighty fine?
When you're making me a cup of coffee I know that you got the time
Sun is shining, the banana tree is leaning slightly towards the moon
Flakes of dust are flying in the light of afternoon
I don't wanna watch no videos or play no games
I wanna sit here and enjoy the slipping of the day
You have a tendency to talk too much when I come by
I wonder if you're all too comfortable or you're too shy-

Serial, który odpalasz, kiedy musisz się uczyć.
Stres, który czujesz przed egzaminem.
Nuda.
Bezsensowny, pusty gniew.

Back in 2003, The Nextmen collaborated with vocalist Dallas Tamaira aka Joe Dukie of Fat Freddy’s Drop for a number of songs that were supposed to get released years ago. However, due to the record label folding, the record, well, just sat. Luckily The Nextmen rediscovered the gems and decided to put it out for the world to hear. “Blow Wind Blow-The Unreleased Sessions” is now available here on Bandcamp.

about
We are proud to announce the new record POUND FOR POUND, a twelve track collaboration between much loved music makers The Nextmen, and Leeds to London lads of live dancefloor destruction Gentleman͛s Dub Club. This is both a musical masterclass in that uniquely UK tradition, blending dancehall, dub, ska, reggae, roots and rap, and a foray to fields of future fun: meticulously tight and precise production that͛s soaked in swagger and sway.
This is an album to put on and instantly warm to, and repeat and repeat and repeat. This sound – this blend – is in essence both effortless and exciting. It͛s heavy and welcome. And the raft of raucous guest vocals from a list that warms the heart and loosens the layers is at the same time intense, charming and captivating. These names need next to no further navigation - Eva Lazarus, Kiko Bun, Joe Dukie (Fat Freddy͛s Drop), Chali 2na (Jurassic 5), Hollie Cook, P Diggs (Shapeshifter), Gardna, J Man & Parly B – these masters making manna will swerve your ears from sweet to sweaty, rolling golden boozy banging joints that force the fancy from hips to hands in the air.
We͛re all aware that The Nextmen know a good groove having been the purveyors of people͛s pleasure for two decades deep. Releasing their own albums, setting clubs and festivals ablaze and working with everyone from ZTrip, Public Enemy, Wilkinson, The Pharcyde, Ms Dynamite, Groove Armada, Plan B, Fat Freddy͛s Drop, Tippa Irie, Cutty Ranks and a million more, this duo are the doyens of the dancefloor. Nine-piece Gentleman͛s Dub Club͛s live shows are a legendary mix of unbridled talent, frenzied fun and infectious energy, reflecting their desire for a damn hot dubbed out paradise of pure celebration. Their studio albums carry that same cool to coddle, embracing sounds so wild and free with focus, passion and precision.
Imagine the joy that͛s been made from this creative chorus of The Nextmen vs Gentleman͛s Dub Club. A collaboration that has produced the brilliant ͚Pound For Pound͛, big tunes, easy on the ears that will lovingly linger on many, many soundsystems for the foreseeable future. DUB-ble the trouble!credits

Soul Inscribed is New York City. It’s your parents' record collection remixed for today. Soul Inscribed is vintage and it’s right now. It’s live instruments. It’s years of practice. It’s cutting edge technology, dropping beats, and live looping. It’s improvisational jazz, the freestyle of Hip-Hop, the energy of the audience sharing its collective soul...
"Tune Up" is a representation of Soul Inscribed’s collective musical experience and passion for all genres of music. Co-produced by Manchester-based producer Irfan Rainy, it’s a fusion of jazz, hip-hop, house, afrobeat, soul, and disco. It’s shared journaling of the everyday struggles and triumphs of surviving life in NYC. It’s a commentary on our experience of the current state of affairs in the United States. "Tune Up" challenges corruption and repression and reflects on communal joy and freedom of expression.
"Tune Up" is Soul Inscribed’s first TDR release and is already building a buzz after being premiered on Gilles Peterson’s renowned radio program on BBC 6 and receiving praise from A Tribe Called Quest and many more - tune in to "tune up"!credits

Stream, download & pre-order LP: https://melting-pot-music.lnk.to/semilla
With their new single “Power”, Pachakuti and young.vishnu deliver a strong political statement against white supremacy and racism.
Musically, “Power” is a heavy deep funk tune reminiscent of the Meters and Poets Of Rhythm and features Masha Kashyna on vibraphone. The groove works as the perfect backbeat for a speech by Civil Rights and Black Power movement leader Stokely Carmichael, delivered in the early 90s.
Inspired by Stokely’s sharp analysis as well as humorous and assertive argument, Pachakuti composed „Power“ to remind today’s movements against racism and white supremacy across the globe of the historical leadership the Black Power movement of the 1970s plays for us until today, including their clear visions of power and self-defence, and the contagious attitude of pride, courage and certainty.
“We must understand, the problems we suffer
is only because we are powerless.
If a white man wants to lynch me, that’s his problem.
If he has the power to lynch me, that’s my problem.
So the only reason why the white man
can lynch me, is because I’m powerless.
Subsequently, the only way I can fight white
supremacy is through power.
P-O-W-E-R!
And the only way you get political power
is through the organized masses.”
(Full speech: https://youtu.be/AiewiXVAqW8)
As for all of the tracks of the „Semilla“ LP, Pachakuti added a poem by his own to enhance the track with his own understanding of Power:
P-O-W-E-R
is not domination,
is not exploitation,
is not oppression.
It is the ability
to understand and respect
to serve and defend
to care and unite.
As the Panthers said.
Black Power for Black People.
Brown Power for Brown People.
Red Power for Red People.
Yellow Power for Yellow People.
White Power for White People.
All Power for all the People.
For each and every one of Us.
About Stokely Carmichael
Stokely Carmichael was the young civil rights leader who, in 1966, popularized the phrase "black power." Carmichael was a leading force in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and "Honorary Prime Minister" of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense (BPP), and lastly leader of the All-African People's Revolutionary Party.
Inspired by Malcolm X's example, he articulated a philosophy of black power and became one of the most popular and controversial Black leaders of the late 1960s. J. Edgar Hoover, director of the FBI, secretly identified Carmichael as the man most likely to succeed Malcolm X as America's "black messiah". The FBI targeted him for personal destruction through its COINTELPRO program, and Carmichael fled to Africa in 1968. He re-established himself in Ghana, and then Guinea by 1969. There he adopted the new name of Kwame Ture and began campaigning internationally for revolutionary socialist Pan-Africanism.
Carmichael was married to Miriam Makeba from 1968 to 1973. He died in 1998.

Son of the sky is a smooth sounding piece of music, made by the german producer Hast, who invited his brother Jonathan Wr. Jr. for the vocals.
The song works with a mixture of a smooth bass and warm roads, surrounded by vibing guitar licks and a unique vocal style. Jonathan Wr. Jr. describes the effort to get in control of our mind and the influences of the universe we’re all coming from.
This is dedicated to the idea of special sounds, which give us the possibility to lose control and flow with our feelings for a small amount of time.-

The Devonns dust off the golden age of 70's Chicago Soul with their self-titled debut album on Record Kicks.
Straight from the streets of Chicago, Illinois, The Devonns (pronounced "De vaughns") are the brand new soul outfit and the latest addition of the Record Kicks' family, whose self-titled debut album that drops April 03, is an assortment of influences taking us back to the heyday of soul.
Drawing influences from bands such as The Dramatics, The Isley Brothers and Leroy Hutson, yet bringing in their own unique modern twist, influenced by artists such as Jamie Lidell and Raphael Saadiq; singer Mat Ajjarapu explains how unintentionally, the rich heritage of Chicago's history with soul music influenced him.
"The city was at the epicentre of a lot of good music back in the 50's all the way to the 80's, a lot of the labels specialising in soul were based in the Chicago and we even had our own sound known as "Chicago soul". Through several years of crate digging it surprised me how many songs I loved were recorded in this city, for example one of my favourites is this great little song by The Natural Four, produced by Leroy Hutson 'Can This Be Real', and released via Curtom Records."
The band started in 2016 after multi-instrumentalist... morecredits

Celia Cruz Y La Sonora Matancera (A side) & Joey Pastrana y Su Orquesta (B S... (rocafortrecords.bandcamp.com)The impact and influence of music of (Afro) Cuban origin has spread from Cuba to the far corners of the world. Its fingerprint can be found through salsa, jazz, funk, soul, hip hop and everything in between. Cuba has an incredibly rich culture of music and dance which is ingrained in its people from birth. With this release we celebrate two compositions by one of Cuba’s finest songwriters: Silvestre Méndez.
Here at Rocafort Records we are delighted to serve up two of Méndez’s biggest compositions at their finest. "Mi Bomba Sonó" featuring the emblematic Celia Cruz and her explosive vocals over La Sonora Matancera’s inimitable pulsating rhythms! On the flip side we have Joey Pastrana’s thundering rendition of ’A Bailar Oriza’, a funky reinterpretation of one of Méndez’s most covered compositions.
Disclaimer: We will not be held responsible for any turntables, dance floors or pants catching on fire! We hope you enjoy this little tribute to Silvestre Méndez as much as we have delighted in putting it together!credits

The Allergies are back with a new double single for 2020.
A-side, ‘Felony’ is a storming soul-sensation, dripping with bittersweet emotion and driving, late-night grooves. It marks a return to that classic Allergies sound, full of dusty sampled beats, toughened up with punchy drums and re-worked lyrical loops. A dancefloor sure shot.
On the flip is Rile ‘Em Up’, a Latin funk bomb that showcases something of a new chapter for The Allergies. As the new album will testify, the duo have swelled their ranks to take in a full touring band, bringing in rapper Andy Cooper, soul diva Marietta Smith, and sax don Mr. Woodnote.
‘Rile ‘Em Up’ represents some of that new live intensity, with its infectious boogaloo samples, party-starting chorus, and club-friendly breakdowns. It’s sunshine in a single.credits

The first single from Brownout's upcoming album 'Berlin Sessions' releasing on March 6, 2020. Pre-Order/Stream here: https://smarturl.it/BerlinSessions
The Austin 9-piece is back with their first full length album of original music in over 8 years. The album is produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos and is the first with lead singer Alex Marrero, whom they originally collaborated with on their wildly successful Brown Sabbath records. Berlin Sessions finds the group merging a multitude of styles, from rock to psych and of course the Latin Funk and Breakbeat on which they have built their sixteen-year career and reputation as Austin's premier party-starters.-
